Free calculators
These three calculators use the same math the book teaches and the app runs. They are free, they run in your browser, and none of them saves what you type unless you ask for the email.
When could I stop working for money?
FIRE calculator
- You type
- What you have invested, what you invest each month, what you spend, and your age if you want it.
- You get
- The year work becomes optional, the age you reach it, your FIRE number, and what a raise does to the year.
When could I stop saving for retirement?
Coast FIRE calculator
- You type
- Your age, the age you want to retire, what you have invested, what you save each month, and what you spend.
- You get
- Your coast number, how much of it you have, the age you reach it, and what a raise does to that age.
What is my raise worth?
Pay raise calculator
- You type
- Your pay and the raise, as a percent or in dollars. Add what you have invested, what you invest each month and what you spend if you want the year.
- You get
- Your new pay, the monthly increase, what you keep after tax, how much sooner the raise brings your year, and whether your pay is below, inside, or above what the job pays.
Which one do I need?
Start with the FIRE calculator if your question is when you could stop working for money. It gives you the year and the balance that gets you there.
Use the coast FIRE calculator if you want to keep working but stop saving for retirement. It gives you the smaller balance that grows into the full amount on its own, and the age you reach it.
Use the pay raise calculator if you have a raise coming, or want one. It gives you the new pay, what you keep after tax, and how much sooner the raise brings your year if you invest it.
All three use the same three assumptions. Growth is 7% a year after inflation. The target is 25 times a year of spending. A raise keeps 70% after tax. Type the same numbers on any of the three and you get the same answer.
What they are built on
The math comes from Everest, the book. Chapter 7 sets the target, which the book calls your FI Number, and chapter 9 covers the raise. The app runs the same math on your real accounts, with a pension and Social Security counted, and a coach who knows your numbers. The pay figures come from public pay surveys, described on the data page.
